Relocation with Kids of All Ages

Relocation with Kids of All Ages

When it’s time for relocation, there comes a tiny bit of chaos in your humble home. Add some children into the mix and the stress will enlarge. You will feel more stressed because you know your kids are also affected by the change – and it will be a change, no matter how good it actually is. All change is at least a little uncomfortable at first, once we ease into it. Your kids, regardless if they are toddlers, teenagers, something in between, younger or older than that, will feel that change alongside you. It doesn’t matter if you are moving to another Chicago neighborhood (for example, moving to Highland Park) or moving to another US state. Relocation will be tedious for both you and your child. But, how can you successfully move with them? Here are some pieces of advice.

Have a Conversation

The smaller your kids are the less are the chances of them remembering the relocation. However, that doesn’t mean it won’t affect them, especially the older ones. Give them the information they need and remind them that they can always talk to you if they get sad about the change. Relocation stress is real, and it affects kids, too.

Share Your Schedule & Plans

This one applies especially to children around (or of) age between 10 and 18. Since they can understand the stress and the challenges around everyday preparations for the move (including the day when the pro movers arrive), they deserve that you let them know what you’ve planned. Of course, some things might change on the go, but once you inform them about all the major changes and plans, they will also feel on top of the situation.

Include Them

Even the smaller kids (and especially the older ones) can be taught good habits and discipline that will be useful for them in the future. If they pack, organize or label the boxes with you, they will feel more included and busy, which is great for building their capabilities. As for small kids, even though they want to help, make sure to keep them away from sharp objects like scissors or knives. Even though it seems like a lot of work, relocating with children will be just as rewarding once you are done with it. Ease into it, and may you have the best of luck in the process.
