How To Prepare For Moving During COVID

There are lots of ways to make the most of this time when we are all in the same situation, hunker down at home. But what to do for people who need to move now, people who decided to be closer to their family, or bought the new house before the quarantine, or people whose rent is over? American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) posted on their website some tips according to the latest social distancing and disinfection recommendations from CDC.

Are Moving Companies Still Operating?

Although most businesses are closed to stop the virus spread, there are few opened, which considered “essential.” In most states moving business is one of them, but it’s better to check local rules. STI Moving and Storage is operating in all our locations, including Phoenix, AZ.

How To Protect From The Virus When Moving

AMSA prepared quite easy steps to protect you and the moving crew while loading and transferring. Here are the most important ones:

  • Try to plan everything more as accurate as you can; this is the situation when being careful is what you need. When you are about to buy packing supplies, do it at once and avoid visiting stores multiple times. You can also check with your moving company if you can order packing supplies.
  • Avoid using free boxes as the virus’s known to be contagious for around 24 hours on cardboard. If you order plastic bins provided by a moving company, make sure to sanitize before using them.
  • Prepare for your deep house cleaning and additional disinfection of your belongings while packing.
  • Finish packing everything at least a day before the moving crew arrives to avoid possible virus spread.
  • Try to make a sink, soap, and paper towels available to the movers. If it’s not possible, supply them with sanitizers if you have some extra.
  • Consider donating food if you have some left, check if there’s a way to do it in your city. It will also lighten your load.
  • If you or your family members experience coronavirus symptoms or have been in contact with someone who did, inform your moving company as soon as possible.
