Moving day can sneak up on you and turn into one of the busiest days of your life. So, it’s important to ask yourself—are you really ready? Having a simple moving checklist can help you stay on track and make things a lot easier.

There’s a lot to keep in mind when you’re getting ready to move. A checklist helps you stay organized and makes sure you don’t miss anything important. The good news? STI has already created an easy-to-follow checklist that covers every part of your move—so you don’t have to stress about forgetting a thing.

Clear the Path for a Safer Moving Day

To make things easy and safe for the movers, clear all the walkways around your home. Here’s what you should do:

  • Remove any potted plants or planters from your porch, driveway and walkways.
  • Take away all door mats & floor mats.
  • Roll up & remove rugs. Don’t worry — the movers will cover your floors with non-slip floor protectors.
  • Take down anything hanging low like wind chimes or hanging plants.
  • Unhook the spring on your screen door so it can stay open while the movers are loading things.
  • If the moving company packed for you, make sure to keep the paths clear so the movers and driver can move around easily.

Show the Movers What Matters Most

When you’re doing a walkthrough with the driver, take a moment to show them which items are extra special to you. Even though the movers will handle everything with care, it’s helpful to let them know which things mean the most so they can be extra careful.

Also, point out the boxes you’ll need right away in your new place—like ones with kitchen stuff, bathroom essentials or your kids’ toys. This way, they can unload those first and make your first day in the new home easier.

Before the Driver Leaves – What You Should Do

Before the moving truck pulls away, make sure you fully understand all the paperwork you’re signing. If anything is unclear, don’t hesitate to ask the driver to explain it.

Give the driver your contact details for the new place, so they can reach you if plans change. Also, get the driver’s contact info — like their phone number or tracking details — so you can stay updated.

Ask if your stuff is the last to be loaded on the truck and when the final items will go on. This can help you figure out when the truck will leave for your new home. Also, ask when they plan to deliver your belongings so you know what to expect.
