Liability Questions

Yes. In accordance with ICC regulations, your Bill of Lading issued by STI Moving and Storage provides you with FREE Valuation Coverage (i.e. insurance) at $0.30/pound per article valuation for local moves and in accordance with U.S. Department Transportation, your Bill of Lading issued by STI Moving and Storage provides you with FREE Valuation Coverage (i.e. insurance) at $0.60/pound per article valuation for long distance moves. *This is a minimum amount of protection and the customer should be aware that this does not provide full coverage insurance for belongings. Having this protection does not exclude the purchase of additional third party insurance.

Packing and Preparation Questions

Make sure your home is ready for the crew. Pack as much as possible before the movers arrive. This will make things quicker and smother and help avoid last minute costs. Move anything off the porch and walkways that may obstruct movement of your belongings out of the home. Have boxed items that will not be shipped clearly marked and moved away from items that will be shipped. Remove all small throw rugs from traffic areas that could cause the driver or crew to trip or slip

We offer FREE pad wrapping, to protect against scratches and dents, of all large furniture items this applies to both local and long distance moves. If needed, all of our trucks are fully equipped with last minute supplies, such as boxes, shrink wrap, etc. Please ask your Relocation Consultant about special offers for FREE BOXES and visit our online store to purchase a moving kit or order packing supplies.

Whether you are moving locally, within Chicago, or moving Long Distance: Make sure medications, important papers, keys and a change of clothing are set aside. Make sure you’ve planned meals – it can be a long day and it’s a good idea for everyone to eat breakfast. Give children activities or responsibilities that keep them out of the path of the movers. Keep pets protected and out of harm’s way.

Yes. The movers disassemble and reassemble all large pieces of furniture, free of charge, excluding items purchased at IKEA and cribs.

Because of the delicate and perishable nature of these items, we are prohibited from moving plants. The stress and heat of being inside the moving trailer usually causes them to die. Additionally, many states do not allow the entry of plants. Be sure to understand your state’s regulations prior to moving the plants in your own vehicle.

Most people prefer to have their fragile items such as: china, glass and crystal, professionally packed when moving. However, if you decide to pack these items yourself, remember to wrap those items individually, provide plenty of cushioning and make sure it is a firm pack, but not overstuffed.

Yes. These include but are not limited to: Explosives, dangerous goods or anything that might cause damage to property such as gasoline, kerosene, paint, matches, ammunition, etc., property which cannot be taken from the premises without damaging the article or the premise, pets, coins, valuable papers of any kind (bank bills, currency, deeds, notes, drafts, etc.), jewelry and precious stones, stamp collections, revenue stamps, letters or packets of letters, perishables – Food, plants or living things that may die or spoil in transit

The earlier the better, but no matter how short your time-line, STI Movers will work with you to come as close as possible to your desired moving dates. Most customers reserve a spot on the schedule about 4-6 weeks prior to moving. This helps us meet your needs. Make certain that you receive and sign an Order for Service, via email, to specify your moving dates and special requests. If your pickup and delivery dates are critical due to such factors as lease expiration or a real estate closing, you may choose an extra-cost service which will enable us to accommodate a more precise, reasonable schedule. If you already know your moving date, call us now and a moving consultant will help you get started.

This depends on many factors, such as: the time of year, weather conditions, the size of your shipment, the time required for loading and unloading, and the direction and distance your shipment is traveling. Request a free quote and one of our Relocation Consultants will give you an accurate estimate based on all the specific requirements of your move.

Our busiest times are: the summer months, the end of each month and holiday weeks. While the date may make a difference in the overall cost, availability of trucks and loading crews, we will work to accommodate you and make your transition as smooth as possible.

Because the furnishings of the average household will not fill a van, it is often necessary for two or more shipments to be loaded on the same van. Each shipment is carefully sectioned off and labeled from the others.

A binding estimate articulates, ahead of time, the exact cost of the move based on the services requested or deemed necessary at the time of the estimate. If you add items to be moved or require additional services, such as packing, a shuttle, etc., between the time of the estimate and the time of your move, there will be additional charges. Please ask your Relocation Consultant for further information.

To reserve a spot on the schedule, we require a $50 hassle-free deposit for Local Moves (Chicago Area) and a $200 deposit for Long Distance Moves. The deposit is applied to the total cost. Payment forms accepted are Visa, MasterCard and Discover. We do not accept personal checks at any time. The deposit is fully refundable up to 72 hours prior to the moving date, if cancellation is necessary.

Cost and Payment Questions

The price for moving long distance is calculated based on the weight of your belongings. We take your belongings to a certified weight station and you are charged only for the number of pounds your shipment weighs. The price can also be calculated based on cubic feet. This is called a binding estimate.

Forms of payment that are accepted are: cash, cashier’s check and money order. Visa, Master and Discover Card are also accepted with a 3% convenience fee. We do not accept personal checks at any time.

For Long Distance Moves, 50% of the total balance is due at the time of pick up. The remaining balance is due at delivery. All charges must be paid before your shipment is unloaded at destination. Forms of payment that are accepted are cash, cashier’s check and money order. Visa, Master and Discover Card are also accepted with a 3% convenience fee. We do not accept personal checks at any time. Please note, we require a $200 hassle-free deposit for Long Distance Moves which is applied to the total cost.

A. Payment for Local Chicago Moves is collected at the final destination prior to unloading the shipment. Forms of payment that are accepted are cash, cashier’s check and money order. Visa, Master and Discover Card are also accepted with a 3% convenience fee. We do not accept personal checks at any time. Please note, we require a $50 hassle-free deposit for Local Moves which is applied to the total cost.

Charges for local shipments are calculated on an hourly basis. There is a two hour minimum plus travel fee. Request a free quote and one of our Relocation Consultants will give you an accurate estimate based on all the specific requirements of your move.

Delivery Questions

To reserve a spot on the schedule, we require a $50 hassle-free deposit for Local Moves (Chicago Area) and a $200 deposit for Long Distance Moves. The deposit is applied to the total cost. We try to accommodate to your schedule as much as possible. If you are moving locally, delivery will be on the same day, unless other arrangements are made. If you are moving long distance, discuss with your Relocation Consultant what your delivery spread will be and what your first available day to receive delivery at your new home is. Make certain that you give us all available and updated contact information, so that we can remain in constant communication with you.

A delivery spread is the estimated numbers of days it takes for your shipment to travel from the pick-up location to the final destination, starting from the first available day you are able to receive delivery. Delivery spread does not start on the day of the pick-up. If you have never moved across country before you might ask yourself, is this normal? Yes, delivery spreads are an industry standard. This is because often the furnishings of the average household will not fill a van, it is often necessary for two or more shipments to be loaded on the same van on the way to the final destination.
