The time has finally come. It’s the day you decided to move out. Everything is set before you relocate across Chicago area (or move long distance). You even found your team of dependable movers, and you think you also found your new home. You finalized all your organizational aspects around moving to the new location. But now, you have to do the final walk-through in now empty space that will be your new home. When you’re doing the final walk-through, to what details do you need to pay specific attention? Let’s check crucial points together.
Doors and Windows
When you are about to move into a property, you need to make sure if every door, window, latch, or lock is functioning as it should. The same goes for garage doors, as well. Even though it might sound tedious, it is crucial for you to check every single door and window – if it opens and closes normally, if the locks work properly, etc.
Floors, Walls, and Ceilings
To inspect everything, you will have to look in all directions. Check for potential nicks, scratches, dents, holes, peeling areas, rust, and any other unmistakable damage. Like with any other areas, when you find serious and concerning damage, you have to address it with the seller or landlord.
Water, Kitchen, Bathroom
When you enter areas where you have water faucets like kitchen or bathroom sink, bathtub, laundry room, or even outside, check all the faucets and if everything functions properly. Is the water running smoothly? How is the water pressure? Also, the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room are the places where you will have many appliances running all the time. Check all the outlets and sources of electricity (which applies to every other room), as well as areas where potential mold or water damage can be found.
Heating, AC, Electricity
It doesn’t matter which season it is – you will need to check the condition of both the heating system and the air conditioning. Also, checking the electricity – light switches, outlets, the circuit breaker in the basement – is crucial.
Any Signs of Pests?
When you move into your new home (or office) you don’t want to deal with awkward surprises like ants, termites, or cockroaches. If you find anything suspicious – insect droppings, rotten wood, etc., consult with the landlord and make notes.
BONUS:
Have a pen and paper, tablet, or smartphone on hand for written down notes as reminders, as well as to take notes, so you’ve got it all covered. Good luck and we wish you a smooth move.
