As a professional moving company, we have seen some piano moving disasters, from getting it chipped to completely broken during the move. Not only is it not safe for your piano, it is not safe for you – you could get seriously hurt from moving such a heavy item alone, even with the help of friends, it’s a bad idea. In this article, we will review all the things you need to move a piano safely:
Tools to move a piano
Professional movers recommend gloves, a string dolly, weightlifting straps, a ramp to the truck, pads for the walkway and at the very least 4 strong people. DO NOT attempt to lift it by yourself!
Size estimate
Measure your piano and write it down, and then check the walkway to see that it can go through it, from its current location to the truck, and then to the new location.
Moving process
- Pack the piano safely – wrap it up and protect the corners and sides. It should obviously stay closed during this step.
- Clear the walkway – prepare the way to be obstacle – free and dry – do not walk on a wet surface with a piano in hand!
- Strap the piano onto the dolly, and then move it carefully onto the walkway and the moving truck.
- Lift the piano up the ramp to the moving truck. Place it in a safe place and strap it if you can.
- Drive carefully and avoid dirt roads.
That being said, there are many ways in which this can go badly – for you and for your piano both. One fall and you will need to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to tune it, and to fix its damages. And we haven’t even mentioned your back. We recommend getting an estimate from professional movers and packers – they can not only move your piano up a tall building, but they can provide you with custom – made carpentry to keep your piano safe during the move.
