Relocating is challenging as is, especially when you need to carry around massive furniture and other items. We do believe you dialed in your gym hours, but unless you are a member of a professional moving team, it might be difficult to handle some large and bulky items.

When you are dealing with large items on your moving day, you want to make sure everything goes well and everyone is safe. Are you sure you want to move big, heavy furniture on your own? Here are some tips on how to relocate massive items carefully and safely.

Check Before You Lift

Before you start carrying anything around – be it moving a mirror, fridge, couch, or bed – check the measurements. Can it fit through the door? How many people need to lift it? What is the best way to carry it? Do not lift a single finger without checking everything.

Lose Attached Parts

What can you remove from the item to make it lighter? For example, if you have a large couch, maybe it has attachable cushions, handles, etc. The same goes for the cabinets and closets – remove the knobs, drawers, and everything else you can detach from it. Not only will it make the items lighter, but you will minimize the option of scratching the walls, floors, etc.

Have Tools on Hand

Whether you’re dealing with the relocation on your own or have help, you should always have a toolkit. A basic set of tools will be needed to disassemble the furniture and re-assemble it in the new location. Also, a moving dolly or straps are of great help if you are DIY-ing heavy lifting.

Protect the Surroundings

Dragging and moving around massive items can damage the floors and walls, as previously mentioned. That’s why you should create some kind of barrier between the objects you’re carrying and the surroundings. Use blankets, bubble wrap, or pads.
